I recently had the opportunity to attend an Introduction to Calligraphy Workshop hosted by Laura Hooper here in New York City. I had always admired the art and form of calligraphy, and was a fan of Laura's work during my years as a wedding planner. So when the opportunity presented itself to take a class with her, I didn't hesitate. The investment was well worth it. May day started with moments of coffee and a selfie.
I arrived a full 15 minutes early and was escorted to my seat. I was excited to see my name in gold calligraphy script along with the essential tools needed to start me on my journey of learning about this beautiful art form.
We were taught the beautiful form of Modern Pointed-Pen Calligraphy by both Laura and Alyssa. The atmosphere was open, light, beautiful, and cozy. It made the environment receptive to learning. We learned all the intricate details of how to properly use our writing tool and about the benefits that come from using it correctly, ink attributes, posture, and that calligraphy is different from lettering based on the lines, strokes, and curves of each letter. And much more! Hmmm... I really learned a lot. And when I couldn't quite get it at times, both Laura and Alyssa guided my hand until I got it. It was so surreal!!! I was being taught calligraphy by Laura Hooper herself. This was a goal obtained and a dream come true!
I really enjoyed this class, and have to say that the perfectionist in me caused me to lag a couple of letters behind. I wished it could have lasted a little longer.
My goal for taking this class was to get educated on the art of calligraphy so that I could share with my clients how this beautiful written art form can enhance their invitations or other items for their wedding or special event. Having a calligrapher involved in the design process sets a tone of excitement and expectation for your guests on a completely different level. Just image opening your mailbox to a beautifully addressed envelope. I realized that seeing calligraphy and actually experiencing it are completely different things.
While this is a service that I don't foresee myself offering, I will gladly partner with a couple of calligraphers to offer it to my clients. I am glad to have walked away with a greater knowledge of this timeless art form, and goodies to practice on my own.
If you are an inspiring calligrapher, stationer, or if you just want to learn more about this beautiful art form, I encourage you to take a class. They are giving more workshops this coming July! So visit Laura Hooper's website and snag your spot, and tell her I sent you! : ) You won't be disappointed my friends!
